Chester FC Youth 4 Ashton Athletic 1

After playing 3 games in 6 days Ashton Athletic 18's had a difficult task taking on Chester FC Youth in the North West Youth Alliance Open Cup Final having only playing them on Thursday drawing 1-1.

We started brightly enough and indeed took the lead thanks to a wonderful strike from Harry Johnson cutting in from the right wing and curling the ball into the top corner. A stunning goal that left the home side on the back foot.

Moments later another great effort from Aaron Simpson's quick feet just missed the far post. We also had two clear penalty shouts which could have turned the game on it's head but the officials didn't do us any favours throughout the game.

Chester equalised and then showed some great quality in taking the chances they created.

We always looked capable of getting back into the game but unfortunately we didn't get the breaks or any of the critical decisions.

After the game Manager Brad Reid gave us his thoughts.

Thanks to everyone for their fantastic support. I couldn't ask anymore from the lads on the day, they gave us everything. A game too far for the lads, some tired legs after 3 games in 6 days. The injury curse hits us again, and hopefully not a serious injury to Charlie Middlemore who left the ground in an ambulance with a suspected broken leg. Congratulations to Chester City who were the better team on the day. I also want to congratulate the young Ashton squad who have been incredible to date. With them all still eligible to play next season they should be very proud. A disappointing day but make no mistake ... this group we will be back!

Post script - (Thankfully Charlie hasn't broken his leg and we hope to see him on the road to recovery)

3 games left for the lads which could see us finish high in the league and a 3rd Lancashire Cup victory already secured. A quality first season in the NWYA by any standards.
