Formby Girls U 14 0 v 4 Ashton Athletic Girls U 14

The eagerly awaited first game of the season for Ashton girls saw them travel to Formby.
On a sunny morning the girls started off brightly with lots of energy and enthusiasm.
Hannah and Emily were their usual busy selves and made a number of mazy runs down each wing.
Scarlett was involved in nearly all the early attempts on goal, showing all the signs of what was to come. Ashton were dominant and when Formby did venture into the Ashton half, the defence were solid and snuffed out any danger quickly.
The breakthrough deservedly came when Scarlett received the ball and turned to run at the Formby defence. Scarlett left Formby’s centre half trailing and drew the keeper out before finishing with a perfect chip over the keeper and into the net. It was well deserved for Scarlett and the team as a whole to see them go 1-0 up. Ashton kept up the pressure with shots coming in on goal on a regular basis.
Formby, however had a good move down the left, when the winger cut inside and fired in a shot which had the sting taken out of it but looked to be going into the net. Inexplicably the ball went wide of the goal and the score stayed at 1-0 going into half time.
The second half started with both sides pressing and Formby stepping up on their first half efforts. Ashton gained a couple of corners and pressed well when not having the ball. Scarlett was looking dangerous every time she received the ball so it was no surprise to see her score her second of the match. Scarlett received the ball midway in the Formby half and without a second thought headed straight for goal. She showed great pace moving between two defenders and as she entered the area, she flashed a shot high into the net with the keeper having no chance. This gave Ashton the all-important second goal and at 2-0 there was no way Formby were coming back into it.
It was in fact a devastating ten minute period which saw Ashton go 3-0 up. Scarlett scored the third for her Hat-rick, and it was a replica of the second, bursting through the efforts of two defenders to finish with a great shot high into the net. Scarlett was absolutely on fire and the forth and arguably the best came five minutes later. Ashton pressed the ball in the Formby half and Scarlett received a pass on the edge of the area. Two defenders seemed to have things under control but Scarlett took the ball a couple of yards further on and hit a shot with the outside of her foot, it was in the net before anybody could react, an absolutely fabulous goal.
Ashton showed their determination to keep a clean sheet, when they were put under pressure, bodies were thrown in the way to make blocks. Charlotte, the Ashton keeper made a fantastic double save to deny Formby and the whole team gave a great effort in the first game of the season.
To sum up, Scarlett will get all the headlines for her wonderful four goals and deservedly so. I could mention each and every member of the team and their contribution to a great score line. The team have come on from last season with a visible improvement in their technique and desire. They have all the ingredients to have a very successful campaign. Well done girls!
