Ashton Girls welcomed Wigan girls to home soil, with Ashton looking for back to back wins after last week’s great 6-0 win over Rainford Rangers. It was a great start by Ashton who did all the pressing early on which resulted in a really good shot at goal by Scarlett McHugh which beat the Wigan keeper just under the bar to make it 1-0. Ashton were now piling on the pressure with Emily Bourne and Hannah Chlodek doing some great work on the wings, and Scarlett Mc Hugh running the game from midfield ,each of them going close with shots either side of the post. The pressure told midway through the first half, two corners in quick succession led to Ashton making it 2-0. The ball was cleared by Wigan and it fell to Emily Bourne, who neatly moved it to the side and hit a low rocket shot into the bottom left corner of the net. As the half went on Shots rained in from Emily, Hannah and Teagan Bibby who forced a great save from the Wigan keeper.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half Wigan applied some decent pressure in and around the Ashton Penalty area but without creating any clear cut chances. Again Wigan forced two corners which the Ashton defence coped with comfortably. Fifteen minutes into the second half Ashton made it 3-0 when striker Eleanor Westhead was in the right place to finish off a really good run and cross from the right wing. A defence splitting pass from central defender Darcy Bowker down the wing to Hannah Chlodek resulted in a whipping low cross which just beat everybody in the box. Ashton were well in control creating numerous chances but with 10 minutes to go there was a thunderous shot by the Wigan number 6 from outside the box which flew in to the top corner giving Charlotte Woodward no chance of saving. Ashton were still in control with shots from Emily going wide and Scarlett who had a great run and shot saved well by the Wigan keeper.
FT Ashton Athletic 3 - Wigan 1
A great all round team display with everyone contributing to a good win. Fourth game into the season and there are really good signs that the team is beginning to gel. Some of the attacking play from Ashton forwards was brilliant but my Girl of the match goes to Scarlett McHugh who scored the first goal and was on fire for the whole game.
