After Wednesday night's exciting finish this game was somewhat of a disappointment as both sides cancelled each other out to play out a goalless draw.
Adam Storey and Dean Midgley were restored to the home sides starting line up while Reece Broadhurst made his first starting appearance of the season in central midfield.
Athletic started the brighter side with the wind behind them but couldn't create any chances to note after good build up play was often spoilt buy poor passing or decision making in the final third. Stockport grew into the game and their aerial threat was always a danger from long balls or set pieces.
It took until the twenty-first minute for The Yellows to create their first chance on goal. The ever willing Downing received the ball on the edge of the box and beat a player before laying off to Storey. His shot was well saved by the away team's 'Keeper who managed to turn it onto the post. The rebound was smashed in by Midgley who's celebrations were cut short for off side.
Athletic could not turn their dominance on the ball into clear cut chances and the remaining minutes of the first half fizzled out as the well organised Stockport defence scuppered attacks and stood firm.
The second half started very much as the first half finished with both sides cancelling each other out. The away side forcing the Athletic defence back, resulting in a string of corners for Stockport which were well cleared by the home side.
Chances remained few and far between and The Yellows had to wait until late in the game before creating their first real chance of the second half. The ball was worked well to Downing who slide the ball past the on rushing 'Keeper only to see his effort go agonisingly wide. However, the effort would not have counted as the official raised his flag for off side.
So no last minute heroics in this one as the game ended in a draw. Certainly not the most entertaining of matches but as they say..."A point is a point!"
Athletic travel to Squires Gate on Tuesday night looking to extend their unbeaten run to three games. However, 'Gate have had an excellent start to the season and will be a massive test for The Yellows who have yet to reach the standard of performance of last season's campaign.
