This game couldn’t come quick enough for the Yellows after Saturday’s lacklustre performance against Stockport Sports. With the injury list growing by the game the management made a few positional changes with joint gaffer Ben Kay slotting in at CB and Dean Midgley partnering Mike Downing up front.
The Yellows came flying out the blocks and immediately pushed Squires Gate on the back foot. Danny Regan and Adam Howard started to make inroads down the wings with both full backs struggling to keep up with the pace. It was Regan who created the first chance when he pinched the ball from the right back and crossed to Downing whose shot sailed over the bar. With Squires Gate unable to get out there own half chances a plenty were being created but the final decision or shot not quite up to the standard of build up. Midgley and Howard should have done better in good positions but failed to test the home keeper. Squires Gate did manage to get in the Yellows half on a couple of occasions but failed to trouble Foulds in the away goal. The pressure finally paid off after 41 minutes, a ball down the line from Adam Howard saw Dean Midgely outpace the defender and smash the ball past the onrushing keeper.
Squires Gate started the second half much brighter playing some lovely one two football to try and open up the Yellows rear guard. The danger was always there with the counter attack and this led to the second goal for Ashton. Good build up play saw the ball find Midgley in the box, a lovely little touch to the on rushing Regan saw the youngster score his first goal for the club with a tidy finish under the keeper. Gate responded 4 minutes later albeit in very fortunate circumstances. Cook made a good run down the right before cutting inside, his low shot was saved by Foulds legs but the ball richocted of Kay’s shoulder and looped into the back of the net. The game then became stretched with both sides taking turn in attacking each other but without either keeper forced into a save. With time running out Gate pushed more players into attack but the Ashton defence was in no mood to let the lead slip and the 3 points deservedly returned to Brocstedes.
A much improved 90 minutes from all the squad including 17 year old Jack Hurst who made his first team debut. With players returning from holiday and injury the squad is slowly returning to full strength for the upcoming games.
