Ashton Athletic FC made the trip to the seaside to take on Squires Gate FC in the NWCFL premier division, With both the sides showing eratic form in the early part of the season, this was never going to be a classic football game.

Terrible defending allowed Squires Gate to take an early lead within the first ten minutes of the game,But it came as no suprise when James Rushton Woods equalised with a header following a superb free kick from skipper Ryan Stewart More bad defending allowed the home side to go into half time with a 2-1 lead with a long ball not being dealt with by the Yellows back line.

Ashton atarted the second half in good form and equalised threw a Mark Bailey shot, this should have seen the yellows push on and collect the three points.But just as we seemed to be pushing the home side back deeper in there own half, Helio Andre got dispossed on the edge of the Squires Gate box and after chasing the ball all the way back to the edge of our box he committted a two footed challenge [in the ref's eyes] on the Squires Gate player and was shown a red card, a bit harsh to be honest but it did not stop the yellows pushing for the winner. But with about ten minutes to go Dave Berry lost the ball on the half way line when all is team mates were waiting for the ball to be delivered forward into the Squires Gate area, The Squires Gate Player broke away and scored what turned out to be the winner. We pushed for the remainder of the game but just could not find the equaliser, the nearest we came to equalising being a Carl Addison shot that got cleared off the line.
