After suffering a 2-0 defeat to Abbey Hey earlier in the season the Yellows needed a proverbial boot up the backside to prevent another. Within 3 minutes Abbey opening the scoring when sloppy play resulted in a needless corner. The ball was crossed to the edge of the box where slack marking allowed the ball to be guided goal wards. To make matters worse the non existent marking allowed Lawrence the easiest of tap ins at the back post. With the rain yet again falling heavy on the Brocstedes pitch high quality football was going to be hard to come by. In a laclustre first half and with the Yellows falling way below the expectation level they still should have put the game to bed. Mike Downing broke the line and with only the keeper to beat he took too long and shot tamely at the stopper. Next to bring a save from the keeper was Harrison, a free kick 25 yards out was arrowed towards the right hand post but this was turned away by the impressive Mcllwaine. Downing then had an even better chance when he was clean through but again took too long and tried to chip the keeper who stayed big to divert the danger. The equaliser came in the 36th minute, a pin point kick from Foulds was flicked on by Small into the path of Williams. His first touch took him into the box and his second found the back of the net.
Some stern words from the management could be heard from outside the dressing room who were far from happy with he first half performance. The Yellows now looked more composed on he ball and pushed Abbey onto the back foot. Some great football resulted in the second goal for Ashton, Howard down the left skinned the full back to cross low to Small. Small swung his wand of a left foot to beat Mcllwaine although he did mange to get a hand to it. Two soon became three, a corner evading everyone at the back post, Small retrieved it and put an inch perfect cross in to the opposite post where returning skipper Wood rose like a salmon to nod home. With conditions deteriorating the football on show was becoming scrappy but fair play to both teams as the tried to play the right way. Abbey nearly got a second when Hardy rattled the bar with Foulds a spectator. The remaining minutes passed with nothing more to note, all in all a pleasing victory and a demon exercised.
MOM or Ashton was Phil Williams.
