Morpeth Town 1 Ashton Athletic 2

After Saturdays 1-1 home draw against Morpeth Town everything was set up for a nail biting replay against The Highwaymen this Tuesday evening and it surely was.
Ashton got off to a cracking start putting plenty of pressure on the home side. The first goal was an absolute screamer from Marcus Cusani who smashed a free kick into the top corner of the net in the 14th minute. Morpeth looked shell shocked and couldn't deal with our direct threat. It wasn't too long to wait as Chris Bandell grabbed a second in the 34th minute and Ashton looked quite comfortable going into the break 2 nil up.
The home side were always going to react but still didn't threaten too much as Aaron Cringle and Luke Holden dealt with everything and were absolutely outstanding at the back.
Not until the 78th minute did we really come under the cosh as the referee deemed a push in the back worthy of a penalty and Joe Walton dispatched the ball into the top corner 1-2.
The last 15 minutes showed the true character of the team as Morpeth threw everything at us but couldn't break the team down. Wave after wave of attacks came in but we defended for our lives. Even the referee seemed to want the game to go to extra time as he added so much time on it seemed like the final whistle would never come. Much to the frustration of our management.
Finally it did come and the team and travelling fans were sent into raptures with the promise of a cracking away tie to York City now a reality as we steam our way into the next round. A truly well deserved victory and reward for the players, management, chairman, committee and supporters. Well done to everyone concerned as this club continues it's amazing track record in the Emirates FA Cup. Come On You Yellows!!!
