Young Yellows Claim Cup Upset

FA Youth Cup action for the Young Yellow again tonight away to Wrexham youth, who had a convincing 6-0 home win over there last opponents. Tonight should be at testing night for both players and management alike.

To be fair both Matty and the lads, were confident about winning the game and progressing in to the next round, this was shown in the dressing room and the pre match warm up.

The game got underway with such a fast and energetic early pace to it, so it was to no surprise that there were some early chances on goal from the Wrexham front line and Keane had to be on his game if he was to keep a clean sheet.

It wasn’t all Wrexham though as both Matty Blakeley and Christy Devlin creating chances, the latter making Wrexham’s keeper Whitlock to make the save.

It was all square at halftime with both team maybe thinking they should have been ahead. But in all fairness I think Wrexham just shaded the first half.

In the dressing room the young yellows were confident they could go on win the game. But the away were still aware that Wrexham are a strong side.

The second half gets under way and within the first 8 minutes Ashton found themselves 2-0 up. The first coming from Warren Twist after Matty Blakeley got his shot off, only for the keeper to parry the ball into to Warren who smashed the ball into the back of the net from 6 yards out 1-0 to Ashton.

Within 4 minutes from the restart Ashton were on the attack again and made it 2-0. In all fairness the goal should have been awarded to Rob Newcombe because he did get the ball over the line, everybody on the pitch had stopped thinking Rob had scored.

But it wasn’t until Brad Green fired the ball into the net that the goal was given, it just goes to show that you have to play to the whistle.

What a fantastic game the ball in flowing from end to end with both teams having to work hard. On 65th minute Warren Twist was pole axed inside the penalty area, the Referee had no other option than to point to the spot.

Brad Green steps up to the plate left footed but the keeper Whitlock saved to low his left hand side. That should have relieved the pressure of the Young Yellows but i wasn’t to be.

Ashton made substitutions late on with Calum Mclaughlan on for Rob Newcombe who had a great game literally ran himself into the ground. Calum had 2 great chances to seal the game for Ashton only for the Whitlock to save one and then blasting the other over the bar from 10 yards out.

Wrexham tried to get back into the game but the rear guard stood firm and the game ended 2-0. Tonight’s game and win was a testament to the Manager Matty O’Hara who got his tactics spot on.

Well done to Matty and the boys for a fantastic and well deserved victory. Seaham Red Stars away is the next fixture in the FA Youth Cup date TBC.
