Nelson 1 Ashton Athletic 2- Sat 14th Sept

**Match Report: A Heroic Victory for the Yellows at the Daisy Arena**

This eagerly anticipated clash at the Daisy Arena lived up to its billing, as Ashton Athletic defied the odds to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory over league leaders Nelson in the North West Counties Division One North. Both sides entered the game on impressive unbeaten runs, with Nelson sitting at the summit of the league, but it was the visiting Yellows who left East Lancashire with three points, capping off a thrilling and hard-fought contest.

From the first whistle, the action was intense and fast-paced, with both teams creating early opportunities. However, it was Ashton who drew first blood in the 20th minute when Josh Nicholson coolly slotted home from the penalty spot. Nicholson’s shot was perfectly placed into the left-hand corner, leaving the Nelson keeper with no chance, despite diving the right way. Ashton had the upper hand, but the drama was just beginning.

Only minutes later, right-back Conal Larkin was harshly judged to have handled the ball inside the area, and not only did the referee award a penalty, but he also sent Larkin off, reducing Ashton to 10 men. With the pressure mounting, goalkeeper Joe Beswick came to the rescue. The in-form shot-stopper guessed correctly and made a stunning save to deny Nelson from the spot, keeping Ashton’s narrow lead intact.

With their backs against the wall, Ashton’s defence was called into action time and again. Unfortunately, Nelson found an equaliser through controversial circumstances, as a dubious goal was awarded despite claims the ball hadn’t crossed the line. The linesman raised his flag, and the goal stood, much to the dismay of the visitors. In the absence of VAR, the Yellows had no choice but to regroup.

Just when it seemed the first half would end in deadlock, Ashton struck again. In the second minute of stoppage time, the ever-reliable Josh High found space and delivered a moment of brilliance to restore his side’s lead. High, who has been in sublime form this season, fired a crucial goal past the Nelson keeper to make it 2-1 going into the break. It was a moment of magic that changed the complexion of the game.

The second half was a test of character for Ashton, who had to withstand wave after wave of Nelson pressure with just 10 men on the field. The Yellows defended with resilience, discipline, and determination, with every player contributing to the cause. Joe White, making his return at centre-back, delivered an imperious performance, commanding the backline and winning every aerial duel. His tackles were immaculate, and alongside his fellow defenders, he formed a near-impenetrable wall in front of goal.

Midfield warriors Zach Conway and Jack Smith were tireless, pressing Nelson's players relentlessly and cutting off their supply lines. Their work rate was outstanding, and they played a crucial role in keeping Nelson at bay, giving their defence valuable respite with every clearance and interception.

Beswick, who had already saved a penalty, continued to impress as the second half wore on. His command of the box and ability to organise the defence kept Nelson frustrated, while his shot-stopping was flawless. As the minutes ticked by and tension rose, it felt like Nelson might find a way back, but Ashton’s resolve never wavered.

Six long minutes of injury time were added, and the atmosphere grew increasingly fraught as Nelson pushed for an equaliser. Yet Ashton stood firm. When the final whistle finally blew, the relief and joy were palpable, as the travelling Ashton supporters erupted in celebration.

This victory was a fantastic achievement for Ashton Athletic, not only securing an away win at the league leaders but doing so while playing with 10 men for more than an hour. It was a testament to the team’s grit, unity, and determination.

Next up for the Yellows is an FA Vase clash away at Wombwell Town, where they’ll hope to carry their winning momentum into cup competition.

Well done, boys—what a result!

**Match Preview: Nelson vs Ashton Athletic – North West Counties Division One North**

This Saturday, Ashton Athletic make the trip down the M65 to East Lancashire to take on league leaders Nelson in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the weekend in the North West Counties Division One North. With both sides in red-hot form, this is shaping up to be a fascinating afternoon of football.

Nelson, one of the oldest clubs in the league, dating back to 1881, have a proud history, and their current form reflects that pedigree. The Admirals are sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 30 points from 12 games, and they come into this clash on the back of five consecutive wins. They’ll be eager to maintain their momentum and tighten their grip on the top spot, with only a single point separating them from their nearest rivals.

However, Ashton Athletic have been on a strong run of their own, winning five of their last six games across all competitions. Sitting in 8th place, but only three points away from the playoff positions, the Yellows will be determined to continue their ascent up the table. A win on Saturday could not only be a statement of intent but also see them move within touching distance of the top contenders.

Both teams boast nearly identical records over their last six outings, with Nelson holding the slight edge by virtue of their undefeated streak. Nelson are 3rd in the form table, while Ashton Athletic are 5th, which sets the stage for a closely contested battle.

For Nelson, the pressure is on to avoid any slip-ups, especially with just a point separating the top three sides. Meanwhile, Ashton Athletic know a victory at The Daisy Arena would be a massive boost to their playoff ambitions.

Kick-off is at 3 pm, and a strong turnout is expected for what should be a highly competitive, thrilling encounter. Fans of both teams can look forward to a game filled with drama, as two of the division’s in-form sides go head-to-head in East Lancashire.
