Ashton Athletic 1 Bacup Borough 1 - Sat 6th April

Match Report.

The first half saw both teams engaged in a tactical battle, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Despite few chances for either team, the game took a dramatic turn just before halftime when Bacup Borough's goalkeeper was sent off for handling the ball outside his box, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The resulting free-kick from Ethan Pearce was top quality with the ball striking the crossbar. The first half ended with the score level at 0-0.

As the second half commenced, Ashton Athletic seized the initiative. with Conal Larkin breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute by cutting in from the right and slotting the ball into the net, giving his side a 1-0 lead. However, despite going down to 10 men Bacup Borough played very well and responded strongly, equalizing through a header from a corner, levelling the score at 1-1 in the 70th minute.

Both teams displayed resilience in defence with goal-line clearances and crucial saves. For Bacup centre-back and goal scorer Scott Johnston and for The Yellows Calum Wilson, Chris Cottington and keeper James Aspinall, ensuring the score remained level until the final whistle.

Despite late pressure from Ashton Athletic, a great strike from Jack Smith hit the post and Bacup Borough's substitute goalkeeper made two crucial saves to deny the hosts a late winner. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams sharing the points.
