Ashton Athletic were left to rue missed opportunities once again as they slipped to a narrow 1–0 defeat away to Ashville AFC on the Wirral on Tuesday evening.

The result was particularly disappointing given the quality of Ashton’s first-half performance, when the visitors created a number of opportunities and played some excellent football without finding the crucial breakthrough.

Ashton started brightly and were soon looking dangerous, creating several early chances without quite managing to trouble the scoreboard.

With 15 minutes played, Ashton were beginning to settle into the contest, and in the 23rd minute midfielder Luke Crompton came close to opening the scoring when he fired just over the crossbar. Ashville responded by going close themselves as the game began to develop into an entertaining and competitive encounter.

Ashton continued to press and were increasingly looking the more threatening side. On 32 minutes, however, it was the home side who came agonisingly close to taking the lead, only for Cal Wilson to produce a superb goal-line block to deny what looked certain to be an Ashville opener. Wilson's intervention proved vital as Ashton continued to dominate possession and create chances.

By the 37th minute, Ashton were firmly on top and knocking on the door. Chance after chance was being created, but once again the final touch or finish was proving elusive.
Despite their dominance, the visitors could not find the breakthrough before the interval and the teams went into half-time level at 0–0.

It had been an excellent first-half display from Ashton, who had created the better chances, played some attractive football and looked capable of taking all three points. The only thing missing was a goal.

The second half began in a much more even fashion, with Ashville looking far more competitive and Ashton finding it harder to impose themselves on the game in the same way they had before the break.

On 63 minutes, Ashton made a double substitution, with Tom Beswick and Josh Brierley making way for Sam Gill and Joseph Pennington.
However, within just a minute of the changes, Ashville found the breakthrough.

It was a scrappy and somewhat scrambled goal, difficult to see clearly from the Ashton viewpoint, but it was enough to put the home side 1–0 ahead and leave Ashton with an uphill battle for the remainder of the evening.

The goal appeared to knock Ashton out of their stride. Although the game remained highly competitive, the visitors struggled to rediscover the fluency and attacking threat that had characterised their first-half performance.

A further double change came in the 76th minute, with Luke Crompton and Chris Webster who had come close, with a header from a corner just over the crossbar replaced by Jake Davison and Ryan Knowles as Ashton looked for a way back into the contest.

The substitutions did liven things up but despite continuing to battle until the final whistle, Ashton were unable to find an equaliser and ultimately returned home empty-handed.
There were nevertheless plenty of positives to take from the performance.

Joe Barlow produced another strong display at centre-back and was voted Ashton Athletic's Player of the Match by the club's supporters on X. Zach Conway also worked tirelessly in midfield, putting in another tremendous shift, while Cal Wilson was outstanding defensively and was deservedly named Ashville's Player of the Match at the end of the game.

Luke Crompton and Tom Beswick also impressed during their time on the pitch, while goalkeeper Joe Beswick produced another solid performance between the posts.

Ultimately, though, Ashton will once again look back on a game in which they created enough opportunities to take something from it, particularly during a dominant first half, but failed to make those chances count. It is an area that Ashton will need to address quickly as they look to put this run of results behind them.

The opportunity to bounce back comes on Saturday, when, in a reversed fixture Ashton Athletic return to Brocstedes Park to face Halewood Apollo in the North West Counties Division One North.
With home advantage behind them, Ashton will be hoping to turn the encouraging elements of this performance into three points.
