Ashton Athletic were left to rue missed opportunities and fine margins as they suffered a 3–1 home defeat to Flixton at Brocstedes Park.Despite still carrying a number of injuries, The Yellows produced an excellent performance against a strong Flixton side and dominated large spells of the game. Unfortunately, the performance was not rewarded with the result it deserved.

Ashton started brightly and were soon on the front foot, but it was Flixton who took the lead in the 18th minute. Joe Beswick produced an excellent save, but the visitors reacted quickest to the rebound to tap home from close range. It was a harsh blow for Ashton, particularly given the way the game had been developing, but there was no sign of heads dropping as The Yellows continued to take the game to their opponents.

Luke Crompton, operating at centre back, was outstanding throughout and produced an excellent run forward before setting up Josh Nicholson, whose effort narrowly missed the post. Ashton were also left frustrated by two major penalty appeals that went unanswered.

First, Jake Davison played the ball inside to Tom Beckett, who appeared to be clearly brought down inside the Flixton penalty area. Then Marcus Cusani was pulled down by the Flixton goalkeeper on the goal line, but once again the officials waved play on. Despite the frustrations, Ashton remained positive and continued to look the more dangerous side, but went into the half-time interval trailing 1–0.

The second half followed much the same pattern, with Ashton continuing to press for an equaliser. Crompton came close with an excellent effort following a corner, but his shot flew just over the bar.

Then, in the 73rd minute, the pressure finally told.
Josh Brierley, operating at right back, played the ball into Marcus Cusani, who was leading the line at No.9. Cusani showed great strength and skill to beat two defenders before slipping a perfectly weighted pass back into the path of Brierley.

Brierley composed himself before unleashing a superb strike past the Flixton goalkeeper to level the scores. It was a terrific goal and, more importantly, a thoroughly deserved equaliser for Ashton.

With momentum now firmly behind The Yellows, Ashton continued to push forward and looked capable of completing the comeback.

Joe Pennington then came agonisingly close to putting Ashton ahead when his superb strike rattled the crossbar. Had that effort found the net, it was difficult to see how Flixton would have recovered.

But football is often decided by the finest of margins, and Ashton were made to pay for not taking their chances. With just minutes remaining, Flixton broke forward and regained the lead with a finish from an acute angle after the ball had spilled wide from an attack. It was a desperately tough goal for Ashton to concede after dominating so much of the game.

The Yellows threw everything forward in search of another equaliser, but Flixton were able to exploit the space left behind as Ashton committed players forward and added a third on the break in the final stages.

The final scoreline of 3–1 was harsh on Ashton, who had produced arguably one of their better performances despite the result.

There will undoubtedly be disappointment at the final whistle, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The effort, determination and quality shown by a depleted Ashton squad deserved far more than the result ultimately delivered.

Football can be cruel, but if The Yellows can reproduce this level of performance, it surely won't be long before the results start to turn.
