Ashton battle hard to earn a point

The Yellows27 Mar - 17:21

Ashton Athletic 2 Fulwood Amateurs 2 - Sat 28th March. Match Ball Sponsors - Waterside Training.

Ashton Athletic welcomed Fulwood Amateurs to Brocstedes Park on an afternoon where all four seasons seemed to appear—sunshine, strong winds, cold spells and even hailstones—but despite the conditions, both sides produced an entertaining contest.

Playing into a strong wind, Ashton were the better side in the first half and looked dangerous every time they crossed halfway. Fulwood attempted to use the conditions, but it was Ashton who struck first. From a throw-in, Adam Gilchrist held off his marker and slipped the ball through to Will Adams, who rode a challenge before calmly finishing into the corner—an excellent goal from the eventual man of the match.

Fulwood pushed hard before the break, but Ashton’s defence, led superbly by Cal Wilson, stood firm. However, just before half-time, Jake Greene was sent off for a second yellow card after throwing the ball away, leaving Ashton 1-0 up but down to ten men.

Despite expecting to benefit from the wind in the second half, Ashton came under early pressure. Fulwood equalised within four minutes of the restart and then took the lead shortly after.

To their credit, Ashton refused to fold. Sam Oko stepped into midfield and began to dictate play, while Zach Conway’s tireless running helped keep the side competitive.

The equaliser came on the hour mark. From a free-kick on the right, Gilchrist played the ball down the line for Conway, whose pinpoint cross was met by Adams, powering a header into the top corner for his second of the game. Giving the keeper no chance.

Both sides had chances to win it, but Ashton’s resilience with ten men ensured they earned a well-deserved point—one that on another day might have been all three.

Attention now turns to an exciting Easter double header at home, with Daisy Hill visiting on Saturday followed by local rivals Ashton Town on Easter Monday

Match Preview

Ashton Athletic are back in action at Brocstedes Park to take on Fulwood Amateurs in the North West Counties Division One North League.

Ashton Athletic return to Brocstedes Park tomorrow facing a crucial test as they take on Fulwood Amateurs. Despite some encouraging recent performances, Ashton remain in a difficult league position and know that turning those displays into points is now essential if they are to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The Yellows have picked up two wins from their last six outings, showing signs of progress, but consistency will be key in the weeks ahead. Visitors Fulwood arrive in challenging form themselves, having lost their last four matches, so both sides will see this as a big opportunity to get back on track.

As ever, football rarely follows the script, and with both teams hungry for points, supporters can expect a competitive and hard-fought encounter.

It promises to be a special afternoon at Brocstedes Park, so come down early and make the most of the day:

* Bar open from 1pm
* Happy Hour from 1–2pm
* Kitchen open from around 2pm

Get behind the lads and enjoy a great afternoon of non-league football.
