Ashton Athletic made the perfect start to the new season with an impressive 2-0 victory over AFC Blackpool at Brocstedes Park in an entertaining and fiercely contested opening-day encounter.
Played in almost perfect summer conditions, the sunshine provided an ideal backdrop, although a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch proved a major factor throughout the afternoon, making life particularly difficult for the teams defending the goal in front of the main stand.
The visitors almost made the perfect start after just four minutes when a defensive error gifted them a penalty. It looked certain to be an early setback for Ashton, but returning goalkeeper Joe Beswick came to the rescue. Although difficult to tell from the stands, Beswick appeared to get a crucial fingertip to the spot-kick, diverting it onto the post before the danger was eventually cleared. It was an early warning for The Yellows and a moment that would prove pivotal.
With the wind at their backs, AFC Blackpool enjoyed the better of the first half, employing a direct approach that repeatedly tested the Ashton defence. However, The Yellows stood firm throughout. The back line produced a disciplined and resilient display, with David Oko outstanding at the heart of the defence, while Beswick continued to inspire confidence behind them.
The game was fiercely contested across every area of the pitch, with both sides battling for control. Despite Blackpool's territorial advantage during the opening 45 minutes, Ashton defended superbly to ensure the sides went into the interval level at 0-0.

The second half belonged to Ashton Athletic.

Using the conditions to their advantage, The Yellows pushed the visitors deeper and deeper into their own half, creating a succession of promising opportunities. Blackpool remained dangerous on the counter-attack, however, and came within inches of taking the lead from a corner. A powerful header appeared destined for the top corner before Beswick produced an astonishing save, springing across his goal to claw the ball away. It was a spectacular piece of goalkeeping that would grace any level of football and undoubtedly one of the defining moments of the match.
That incredible stop seemed to lift Ashton even further. The momentum continued to build as wave after wave of attacks followed, although the breakthrough remained frustratingly elusive.
The introduction of fresh legs injected even more energy into the home side, with every substitute making a positive impact. None, however, influenced the game more than club captain Josh Nicholson.
Entering the action full of determination, Nicholson produced the moment everyone had been waiting for in the 82nd minute. Breaking down the right-hand side, he unleashed a thunderous strike that flew into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot and sending the Brocstedes Park faithful into celebration.

Rather than protect their slender advantage, Ashton continued to press forward in search of a second goal. Their ambition was rewarded in the 89th minute when Tom Beswick's clever attempt to lob the goalkeeper drifted across the face of goal, allowing Nicholson to arrive at the far post and head home from close range to seal both the victory and all three points.
It was an excellent advert for North West Counties football and a game that, at times, could have gone either way. However, Ashton's second-half performance, combined with a superb defensive display and outstanding goalkeeping, made them worthy winners.

Man of the Match was Marcus Cusani, whose tireless work rate and influence throughout the game epitomised the team's commitment and determination.
Supporters voting in the club's X poll selected two-goal hero Josh Nicholson as their Player of the Match after his match-winning contribution from the bench.

A winning start, a clean sheet, three points, and plenty of positives for The Yellows as the new season gets off to the best possible start...
