Ashton Athletic’s winning run came to an end on Tuesday evening as they suffered a 5-2 defeat away to Fulwood Amateurs in the North West Counties Division One North. However, while the final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory for the home side, the reality was a much more competitive encounter, with late goals adding an exaggerated gloss to the result.
The Yellows got off to the worst possible start when Fulwood took the lead after just eight minutes. Thankfully, Ashton responded almost immediately, with Tom Beswick producing a fine run just two minutes later to bring his side level. The effort took a deflection on its way into the net, but the goal was reward for a positive response from the visitors.
With the scores level, both sides continued to push forward in search of an advantage. Ashton had goalkeeper Joe Beswick to thank for keeping them in the contest, as he produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Fulwood and ensure the sides went into the break on level terms.
Unfortunately, the second half began badly for the Yellows. Fulwood regained the lead in the 51st minute, catching the Ashton defence out to make it 2-1.
Ashton looked to respond, with Marcus Cusani and Luke Crompton both having opportunities to get their side back on level terms, but neither could find the finish required. Instead, it was Fulwood who struck again, extending their advantage to 3-1 in the 62nd minute with a well-taken header from a corner.
Despite facing a two-goal deficit, Ashton refused to give up the fight. Their persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Tom Beckett capitalised on an error by the home side before the in-form Luke Crompton finished the move to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Suddenly, the game was back in the balance, and with time running out, Ashton threw everything forward in pursuit of an equaliser. The Yellows pushed hard, looking for a dramatic late comeback, but their attacking commitment left opportunities for Fulwood to exploit.
Sadly for Ashton, the home side took full advantage, scoring in the 90th and 93rd minutes to turn a closely contested game into a 5-2 defeat for the visitors. The late double was a cruel blow for a side that had battled hard throughout, and the final scoreline did little justice to the contest that had unfolded over the preceding 90 minutes.
There was, however, a significant positive for Ashton Athletic, with striker Cole Exley making his long-awaited return to action after 14 months out with a serious injury. His appearance was a welcome sight and a boost for the squad as the season continues.
While the result was disappointing, there were enough positives in Ashton’s performance to suggest that, on another night, things might have turned out very differently. The Yellows will need to dust themselves down, learn from the experience and turn their attention to the next challenge.
There was little doubt about Ashton’s Player of the Match, with Joe Beswick producing an outstanding display between the posts. His string of excellent saves kept the visitors in the game for long periods and ensured the score remained competitive well into the second half.
Ashton Athletic return to Brocstedes Park on Saturday, 17 October, when they welcome Holker Old Boys in the North West Counties Division One North.
Thank you, as always, for your fantastic support of The Yellows.
