Ashton take the points against Maine Road

The Yellows

Ashton Athletic 1 v 0 Maine Road - Tues 29th Sept

North West Counties Football League – Division One North
There was a sense before kick-off that something had to give. With just two points separating Ashton Athletic and Maine Road in the Division One North table, both sides arrived at Brocstedes Park knowing that three points could provide a much-needed boost to their respective campaigns.

Maine Road had managed just one win in their previous six league outings, while Ashton had endured the frustration of seeing some genuinely encouraging performances fail to produce the points their efforts arguably deserved.

Under the Brocstedes Park floodlights, however, Ashton finally got the reward they had been chasing.

A determined defensive display, a goal from an unlikely source and some nervy moments in front of goal ultimately secured a deserved 1-0 victory for the Yellows.
Ashton started brightly and were soon enjoying the greater share of possession, putting the visitors under pressure and looking the more purposeful of the two sides.
That pressure finally told in the 20th minute.
A dangerous free-kick was whipped into the Maine Road penalty area from the left and, as the visiting goalkeeper fumbled his attempt to deal with the delivery, centre back Joe Barlow was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

The Ashton defender needed no second invitation, calmly tapping the loose ball home to give the Yellows a deserved lead.

With the goal behind them, Ashton continued to look comfortable for much of the opening period, although Maine Road gradually began to grow into the contest as half-time approached. The Ashton defence, though, stood firm.

There were excellent performances right across the backline, with Barlow continuing to impress at the heart of the defence after his goal-scoring contribution, while Jake Greene produced an excellent performance at right-back, both going forward and in defence.

Maine Road came close to an equaliser in the 44th minute when an effort flashed narrowly past the post, but Ashton survived the late pressure.

There was still time for the home side to threaten again before the interval, and Jake Davison almost doubled the advantage right on half-time, only to see his effort sail over the crossbar.

Half-time: Ashton Athletic 1–0 Maine Road.

The second half began with Ashton once again on the front foot. For around the first 25 minutes, the Yellows created several opportunities to put the game beyond Maine Road's reach, but the finishing touch deserted them. Chance after chance came and went, with Ashton unable to find the target when a second goal would have made life considerably more comfortable.

There was further frustration when Ashton thought they had doubled their advantage, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. That meant the visitors remained within touching distance right until the final whistle.

Maine Road knew that a single moment could change the game, but Ashton’s defence continued to stand up to the challenge and refused to surrender the lead they had worked so hard to establish.

When the referee finally brought proceedings to an end, there was a welcome feeling of relief around Brocstedes Park.

Full-time: Ashton Athletic 1–0 Maine Road.

It could, and perhaps should, have been a more comfortable victory given the chances Ashton created. But on a night when points were the priority, the Yellows will gladly take the three that have been coming for some time.

After a run of performances that haven't received the rewards they deserved, Ashton finally got the result to go with the effort.

And under the lights at Brocstedes Park, Joe Barlow’s 20th-minute tap-in proved enough to secure a valuable and thoroughly welcome three points.
