Under the lights at Brocstedes Park, Ashton Athletic returned to home soil on Tuesday night for a 7:45pm kick-off, the pitch once again in superb condition and the air unseasonably mild. With no threat of rain and a lively crowd in attendance, Squires Gate made the trip down from the Fylde coast for what promised to be a competitive North West Counties Division One encounter.
Ashton began brightly, immediately on the front foot and asking questions of a well-drilled Squires Gate back line. Luke Crompton was electric in the opening exchanges, twice going agonisingly close and repeatedly ghosting past defenders in and around the penalty area. He looked every inch the difference-maker, which made his enforced departure through injury all the more frustrating.
At the other end, Joe White typified commitment. As ever, he put his body on the line, throwing himself into challenges and refusing to yield an inch. In midfield, Sam Oko was outstanding — composed in possession, tireless out of it, and central to everything positive Ashton produced. Alek Calaku provided thrust and pace down the flank, matching his attacking intent with some superbly timed tackles.
Despite Ashton’s strong start, it was the visitors who struck first, taking the lead in the 35th minute to go into the break 1–0 ahead.
The second half brought renewed urgency but unfortunately Squires Gate doubled their advantage in the 59th minute, capitalising clinically.
Changes were quickly made around the hour mark injecting fresh energy, and Ashton came within inches of drawing level. Calum Wilson’s header looked destined for the net, only to hit the cross bar, and the rebound just wouldn’t fall kindly. Moments later, Marcus Cusani tried his luck, but his effort went over bar. On another night, either opportunity could have shifted the momentum decisively.
To their credit, the visitors proved solid throughout — organised defensively and always a threat on the counter — making life difficult for Ashton and punishing lapses when they came.
Ashton continued to battle, but the night grew more challenging. A number of injuries are beginning to mount, a concern as the season reaches its decisive phase. Late on, Joe White, having given everything to the cause, was dismissed for a second yellow card — a harsh end to a typically wholehearted display.
There was recognition where it was due. Sam Oko deservedly claimed the official Player of the Match award from the opposition, while Luke Crompton’s early impact earned him the fans’ vote on X.
Attention now turns swiftly to Saturday’s trip to Colne — another crucial fixture in what promises to be a defining run-in. Every game from here carries weight, and Ashton will be determined to respond.
Thank you, as always, for your outstanding support.
