Ashton Athletic were left frustrated at Brocstedes Park on Saturday afternoon as Thornton Cleveleys came away with all three points following a 2–1 victory in the North West Counties Division One North.

Despite a performance that contained plenty of encouraging spells, particularly in the second half, the Yellows were unable to turn their chances and periods of pressure into the goals their performance deserved.

Ashton started brightly and created some early opportunities, but it was the visitors who struck first after just 10 minutes. The goal came after Ashton were caught out defensively, making it far too easy for Thornton to open the scoring and leaving the Yellows with an early deficit to overcome.

Ashton responded positively, and their persistence was rewarded when they were awarded a penalty following a collision between Thornton goalkeeper and Darren Brannigan.

The incident came as a ball was played forward from midway inside the Thornton half, with Brannigan racing onto it. The Thornton keeper came out to challenge but arrived late, bringing the Ashton debutant down inside the area.

Brannigan was making his first appearance since returning to the club for a second spell, making the moment particularly significant on his comeback. The referee awarded a penalty, with the goalkeeper fortunate to escape with a yellow card rather than being dismissed for denying a potential goalscoring opportunity.

Alfie Belcher stepped up to take responsibility from the spot and made no mistake. The Ashton No.10 calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before finding his bottom-right corner to bring the scores level.

The goal settled Ashton and they continued to look dangerous as the first half progressed, with neither side able to find a second before the interval.

At half-time, the score remained 1–1, with Ashton having every reason to feel encouraged by their first-half display. The Yellows began the second period strongly and immediately put Thornton under pressure.

Marcus Cusani, operating from the left, cut inside and unleashed an excellent strike which had the visiting goalkeeper beaten, only for the ball to crash against the crossbar. It was one of several opportunities Ashton created as they looked to take control of the contest. Dead-ball situations around the edge of the Thornton penalty area also offered promising opportunities, but frustratingly Ashton were unable to make them count.

Having enjoyed a dominant spell, Ashton were then hit with a sucker punch as Thornton Cleveleys regained the lead. The visitors' second goal was particularly frustrating given the pressure Ashton had been applying, and suddenly the Yellows found themselves chasing the game once again.

Ashton continued to push for an equaliser, but despite their efforts they could not find a way through the Thornton defence before the final whistle.

It was a hugely frustrating afternoon for Ashton, who will feel that their performance merited more than the final scoreline suggested. The Yellows created chances, enjoyed significant periods of pressure and showed plenty of attacking intent, but ultimately paid the price for not converting those opportunities.

There was at least one individual performance that stood out, with David Oko named Ashton Athletic's Player of the Match following an impressive display. Also strong performances from fellow defenders Joe Barlow and Jonny Sodhi.

The Yellows now have the opportunity to put Saturday's disappointment behind them when they return to Brocstedes Park next weekend. We'd love to see you at the game.
