Ashton Athletic were left to rue missed opportunities as local rivals Daisy Hill claimed a 2–0 victory at Brocstedes Park.
The Yellows burst out of the blocks, dominating possession and territory in an impressive opening 15 minutes. However, football can be cruel, and against the run of play Daisy Hill struck first on 25 minutes. A strong free kick from distance was parried onto the post by keeper Ewan Dodgson, only for the ball to rebound off him and agonisingly cross the line.
Despite controlling large spells of the first half, Ashton went into the break trailing 1–0.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the hosts pushing relentlessly for an equaliser. Controversy arrived when a clear penalty appeared imminent, only for the assistant’s flag to deny Ashton for offside — a decision that shifted the momentum at a crucial moment.
Throwing men forward in search of a leveller, Ashton were caught on the break in the 70th minute, as Daisy Hill sealed the points with a decisive second.
On the positive side there were strong performances from Sam Oko in midfield and Joe White at the heart of Ashton's defence.
It was a spirited but frustrating afternoon for everyone concerned from Ashton. The management team will be looking for an improvement, in a quick turnaround, as attention now turns to Monday’s clash with Ashton Town, where a big crowd is expected for another local showdown. Kick Off is set for 3 pm so please come down early and give us your support.
