North West Counties Division One North
Two games in four days on treacherous surfaces proved a punishing test for Ashton Athletic as they slipped to a 2–1 defeat away at Garstang in a contest that often resembled survival rather than football.
Following Saturday’s mud-laden battle at Maghull, the Yellows were once again confronted with a pitch that struggled to meet the demands of competitive football. Both sides deserve immense credit for navigating conditions that were heavy, unpredictable and, at times, perilous. It was a minor miracle that the evening passed without serious injury.
From the outset, both found themselves under sustained pressure and it was clear they were fully aware of the stakes in this relegation scrap. The hosts began on the front foot and were rewarded in the seventh minute when a through ball — appearing suspiciously beyond the last defender — was allowed to run its course. With no flag forthcoming, Garstang took full advantage to open the scoring.
Six minutes later, matters worsened. A scramble inside the Ashton penalty area ended with the ball forced home amid confusion, doubling the hosts’ advantage and leaving the visitors with a steep, sodden mountain to climb.
Shell-shocked but not beaten, Ashton gradually regained their composure. There was no shortage of effort or intent, yet clear-cut opportunities proved elusive. A major flashpoint arrived when captain Josh Nicholson was sent tumbling inside the box by a challenge that echoed around the ground. Appeals were instant and passionate, but once again the officials were unmoved.
Half-time: 2–0 to Garstang.
If the first half belonged to the hosts, the second was driven almost entirely by Ashton. The Yellows emerged with renewed purpose and were handed a lifeline in the 56th minute when a penalty was finally awarded. Sam Gill stepped up with authority and dispatched the spot-kick with composure to reduce the arrears.
From that moment, the momentum shifted decisively. Ashton pressed relentlessly, forcing Garstang deeper and deeper. The ball found the net once, only for the offside flag — correctly this time — to intervene. Further chances came and went, and another strong penalty appeal was waved away to mounting frustration from players, staff and travelling supporters alike.
Wave after wave of pressure followed, but the equaliser would not arrive. Despite dominating the second half and showing tremendous character, Ashton were left to rue missed opportunities and contentious decisions.
In truth, every player in yellow gave everything in gruelling circumstances. On another surface — and perhaps with a little more fortune — the outcome may well have been different.
Attention now turns to another crucial encounter as Ashton Athletic host Maine Road this Saturday, 28 February, at Brocstedes Park. Kick-off is at 3pm in what promises to be another vital chapter in this Division One North campaign.
