Defeat for Yellows

The Yellows

Ashton Athletic 1 v 2 Cammell Laird - Sat 29th Aug

North West Counties Division One North

Ashton Athletic were left to rue another frustrating afternoon at Brocstedes Park as Cammell Laird 1907 came from behind to claim all three points with a 2–1 victory.

The Yellows, once again having to contend with a depleted squad due to injuries and absences, produced plenty of effort and determination, but ultimately saw their hard work undone by two goals in the second half.

There were opportunities for both sides during an evenly contested opening, although neither team could find the breakthrough.
Cammell Laird began to enjoy increasing pressure as the first half progressed, with a number of chances going narrowly wide around the half-hour mark. Ashton were finding themselves under pressure at the back, but continued to work hard to stay in the contest.

With half-time approaching, Ashton began to create more themselves and Tom Beswick went close with another promising opportunity, providing encouragement that the hosts could cause problems at the other end.

Despite chances at both ends, neither side could find the net before the interval and the teams went into the break all square at 0–0.

The second half began in much brighter fashion for Ashton and, just six minutes after the restart, the Yellows got the reward their efforts deserved.
The move began with the excellent Beswick, who produced a superb long crossfield pass to switch play and find Jake Davison on the right. Davison showed good awareness to play the ball inside towards Josh Nicholson.

Nicholson then did the rest.
He wrong-footed his marker, cleverly switching the ball onto his left foot before sending a shot towards goal. The effort was on target and, although a Cammell Laird defender made a desperate last-ditch attempt to block it, he could only divert the ball on its way into the net.
Ashton 1–0 Cammell Laird.

The goal lifted the home side and gave the Yellows something to defend, but Cammell Laird responded by stepping up the pressure as they desperately searched for a way back into the game.

Ashton made changes as the match progressed, but the visitors continued to push forward and eventually found their equaliser in the 71st minute.
There was little time for Ashton to regroup before the momentum swung completely in the visitors' favour. Just four minutes after drawing level, Cammell Laird struck again to turn the game on its head and make it 2–1.

It was a cruel spell for Ashton, who had worked so hard to establish their lead.
The Yellows refused to give up and battled right to the final whistle in an attempt to salvage something from the game. However, with the squad once again stretched by injuries and absences, Ashton were unable to find the breakthrough they needed.

Despite the disappointment of surrendering their lead, there were positives to take from a performance full of commitment and endeavour against a determined Cammell Laird side.
In the end, though, the points went back to the visitors, leaving Ashton to reflect on what might have been after holding the lead with less than 20 minutes remaining.
