Ashton Athletic made the trip to East Lancashire knowing the stakes could hardly be higher, taking on fellow strugglers Colne FC in a crucial clash in the North West Counties Football League Division One North. With Colne starting the day just a single point ahead of Ashton Athletic FC, the fixture had all the hallmarks of a classic relegation six-pointer, with both sides desperate to pull clear of the danger zone.
Unfortunately for Ashton, it proved to be a frustrating afternoon at the Haffners Eats Stadium. After a run of encouraging performances in recent weeks, the Yellows struggled to find their usual rhythm and never quite managed to get going.
The hosts struck the first blow in the 23rd minute to take the lead. Ashton did show flashes of promise before the break, particularly while attacking down the considerable slope, but clear chances were limited and the Colne goalkeeper was rarely tested enough to truly threaten the equaliser. Alek Calaku was the standout performer for Ashton in the first half, his energetic runs forward offering the most likely route back into the game. At the interval, however, it remained 1–0 to the home side.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Ashton still unable to build sustained momentum. The introduction of substitutes Josh Nicholson, Adam Gilchrist, Zach Conway and Will Adams did bring fresh energy and helped Ashton push forward more purposefully.
Defensively, Joe White once again delivered an excellent performance at the heart of the back line, but the game slipped further away in the 67th minute when a failed clearance allowed Colne to double their advantage. At 2–0 the task became a steep one, and despite their efforts Ashton were unable to find the finishing touch at the other end.
There is no doubt the players and management will be disappointed with the performance, but attention now quickly turns to the next challenge. After a short break to regroup, Ashton return to action with a trip to face Bacup Borough FC on Wednesday 18 March, with an 8pm kick-off.
As always, thank you for your continued support.
