Ashton Athletic endured a tough afternoon at Brocstedes Park as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against fellow strugglers MSB Woolton in a game overshadowed by atrocious weather conditions.

From the first whistle, driving rain and standing water made life difficult for both sides, with the wings in particular resembling puddle-strewn channels more than playing surfaces. Several fixtures in the region had been called off, and many inside the ground were left questioning why this one went ahead. Still, both teams had to adapt — and it was Woolton who did so with far greater conviction.

The visitors struck twice in the first half, capitalising on Ashton’s hesitancy at the back. The Yellows struggled to get a foothold in the game and offered little threat going forward before the interval.

Manager Jay Foulds made changes at half-time, and they immediately brought Ashton back into contention. Substitute Nathan Beca produced the home side’s best moment of quality just two minutes after the restart, latching onto a loose ball before rifling home from inside the area to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

For a spell, Ashton looked as though they might wrestle their way back into the contest, with renewed energy and purpose. But Woolton’s response was clinical. Goals in the 56th and 78th minutes restored their two-goal cushion and then killed off any hopes of a comeback, leaving Ashton to reflect on what might have been.

Despite the result, there were some positives to take. Zach Conway, who started the game, was outstanding in difficult conditions, showing composure and drive throughout and deservedly earning recognition as Ashton’s standout performer.

It was, however, a frustrating watch for the loyal supporters who braved the weather. With plenty of the season still to play, Ashton will need to quickly rediscover their cutting edge if they are to turn promising moments into results.
