Ashton Athletic made the half-hour journey to Manchester to take on Flixton in the North West Counties Division One North, facing a side who have made an excellent start to the campaign and occupied a comfortable play-off position ahead of kick-off. The hosts had won three and drawn two of their previous five league outings, so Ashton knew they would be facing a difficult challenge.
However, the Yellows could hardly have made a better start. Just five minutes into the game, midfielder Luke Crompton produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area, unleashing a pile-driver that flew into the top corner, giving the Flixton goalkeeper absolutely no chance.
Unfortunately, Ashton's lead lasted barely a minute before the hosts found an equaliser, but the early setback did little to disrupt the visitors' momentum. Ashton continued to play some excellent football, creating several promising opportunities and, for long periods, looking the more threatening of the two sides.
Defensively, the Yellows had looked relatively comfortable until a failure to deal with a Flixton corner proved costly, allowing the home side to head home and take the lead on 23 minutes.
There was little to separate the teams in terms of overall play, but Ashton suffered another blow just before the interval, conceding a third goal right on half-time to leave themselves with a two-goal deficit at the break.
The visitors emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and continued to look dangerous going forward. Two or three excellent opportunities came and went, chances that could easily have brought Ashton back on level terms, but there was better fortune on the hour mark.
Full-back Jake Greene produced an excellent individual effort, making a powerful run down the right-hand side before finishing superbly with a shot into the bottom corner. At 3-2, Ashton were firmly back in the contest and had given themselves a real opportunity to get something from the game.
Once again, though, their celebrations were short-lived. Within a minute, Flixton had restored their two-goal advantage, dealing another frustrating blow to the visitors' hopes of a comeback.
As the game progressed, the home side grew increasingly confident and began to put the Ashton defence under sustained pressure. Some influential substitutions added further pace to Flixton's attacking play, and the hosts took advantage to add two more goals before the final whistle.
The eventual 6-2 scoreline was perhaps a little flattering to Flixton, given the amount of good football Ashton produced and the chances they created. The Yellows will undoubtedly be disappointed with some of the goals conceded, but there were also plenty of positives to take from their attacking performance, and on another day they could easily have found the net on several more occasions.
Goalkeeper Joe Beswick was called upon to make some excellent saves to keep the scoreline in check, while Cal Mahoney, wearing the No.7 shirt, received recognition from the opposition as Ashton's standout performer.
For the Yellows, it was ultimately a frustrating afternoon, but the performance contained enough encouraging moments to suggest that the scoreline did not tell the whole story.
