Ashton Athletic returned to North West Counties Division One North action looking to put a disappointing 4-0 defeat in the Edward Case Cup behind them, with a number of key players still sidelined through injury.

The Yellows made the trip to Simpsons Sports Ground in South Liverpool to face a Woolton side that had made an excellent start to the league campaign, winning both of their opening two fixtures. With enforced changes to the Ashton line-up, the management team also welcomed back Joe White at centre-back following his short spell away from the club.

Played on Woolton's 4G surface, the game began at a high tempo, with both sides working hard to create an opening. The early exchanges suggested a closely fought contest, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested. Indeed, a couple of home supporters were overheard remarking that the game had "0-0 written all over it" — and they would ultimately prove to be right.

Woolton enjoyed more possession and territory as the first half progressed, but Ashton's defence remained resolute, frustrating the home attack and ensuring the sides went into the interval level.

The second half followed much the same pattern. Woolton were well organised defensively and maintained a high line, making it difficult for Ashton to break through without being caught by the offside flag. There were a few contentious decisions that appeared to go the way of the home side, but neither team could find the crucial breakthrough.

Ashton's best opportunity came from Marcus Cusani, who came agonisingly close when his direct free-kick from just outside the penalty area crashed against the crossbar. The Yellows also had a couple of appeals for penalties, although both would arguably have been harsh decisions had they been awarded.

In the end, a goalless draw represented a good point on the road for Ashton. More importantly, it extends their unbeaten league run to three matches and, even more impressively, gives the Yellows three consecutive league clean sheets.

There were some excellent defensive performances, with Calum Wilson, Josh Brierley and the returning Joe White all impressing at the back.

The Player of the Match award went to Luke Crompton, who produced an excellent, battling display in midfield and never stopped competing throughout the 90 minutes.

The Yellows now turn their attention to the FA Vase, with an exciting local derby against FC St Helens next on the agenda. It promises to be another fascinating contest — and one Ashton will be hoping to emerge from with a place in the next round.
